Workshop Explores Cost-Efficient Hydrogen-Driven Maritime Operations

On Monday November 4, 2024, the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences hosted the HyValue WP3 End-User Applications workshop, focusing on the future of maritime operations.

The event brought together experts from industry and academia to discuss the challenges and opportunities of transitioning to hydrogen-powered vessels.

“The workshop served as a very good channel for dissemination on the status of hydrogen-driven maritime operations, and the way forward was discussed. Among the main challenges are to cut the cost of the hydrogen-driven maritime operations and also to get sufficient supply of hydrogen-based fuels. In addition, all the regulatory frameworks are still not in place. In the HyValue center we are doing research to address all these challenges”, says Geir Nævdal, NORCE, who leads HyValue WP 3 End-user applications.

The workshop featured presentations on a range of topics, including fuel cell technology, hydrogen storage and safety, environmental impact assessment, and energy management systems. Key speakers from Corvus, HyEx, TØI, NORCE, Equinor and Ulstein shared their insights on the latest advancements in the field.

An interactive session titled “What’s Missing for Low-Emission Shipping? Addressing Challenges and Identifying Solutions” was also held. Participants discussed infrastructure development, regulatory frameworks, and economic viability among other topics.
